  1. SCUM

SCUM is an incredible survival game with beautiful graphics and some insane details that can add to your survival experience. The map is giant, as well. I personally haven't played too many survival games because of the time they take, but I can see myself sinking hours into this one. You can swap between first person and third person and there are multiple servers to choose from. Zombies, mechs, and players are some enemies you'll encounter but the biggest enemy is the environment. There are loads of different ways to die but also loads of different ways to live. Highly recommended, especially if you're looking for a hardcore survival sandbox game to sink hours into.

  2. Stalcraft

Essentially, it's STALKER except a lot less complicated but a bit of a twist - a PvPvE experience WITH FRIENDS. Even better, it's FREE. It's fairly easy to run and what's interesting is it started as a Minecraft mod and over the past 7 years has been shaped into something different. From their website: "Originally, STALCRAFT was only conceived as a Minecraft fan modification that brings the world of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. into multiplayer mode. Over the past seven years, the project has changed significantly, and is now based on its own game engine. We position the game as an independent product inspired by the developments of GSC Game World, but not copying them." Really a cool way to progress through a story with friends and shoot other online players while you're at it.

    Steam Description:
STALCRAFT is a dynamic survival horror MMOFPS, set in an open world of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.

  3. VEIN (New Zombie Survival Demo)

Vein is currently a free demo that you can download and play. A couple previous developers from the game Dead Matter decided to throw their hat into the zombie survival ring and create their own game. Right now, there's not a lot we know about it, other than it's going to be a multiplayer first person survival game where you can loot almost everything for something you need to survive. The demo is barebones now but wow - it could be something special. Keep your eye on this one and expect this page to be updated.

  4. Deadside

One of the best things about Deadside is it's environment. A gorgeous environment with a massive - MASSIVE - world. The game offers a first person and third person shooter with some lite survival mechanics - these being eating, drinking, and health. The game is currently in early access and despite it's giant size, it doesn't offer any vehicles yet, though those are coming. You can hop onto a server of around 50 players and shoot, loot, gather materials, and build your own custom base. As of now, you can't do anything like cut down trees for this base, so anything you want to add you've got to explore the world to find. One good thing about this game is that it's NOT a zombie shooter - the enemy AI are "scavs." The WORST part about the game, unfortunately, is the gunplay. I'm not a huge fan - but the game is gorgeous enough to keep me coming back occasionally.

  5. Chernobylite

Chernobylite is somewhat nostalgic for me. I haven't played the STALKER games (at least not yet) but I've heard these are very similar. What I HAVE played, though, is the "All Ghillied Up" and "One Shot One Kill" missions of CoD4 and this is reminiscent of that. Not that the gameplay is similar, by any means, but being in the Chernobyl/Pripyat area reminds me of that time. What's cool about this game is that the team over at the Farm51 ACTUALLY WENT to some of these locations and did 3D scans in order to get an accurate portrayal of the environment. I haven't progressed the story too far, but it's nice because it comes with some "Free Roam" maps that you can just hop in and explore (which is what I did in the video below). Graphics for me are stunning, and I know they're likely even better with all the RTX fancy graphics (I do not have an RTX card so only an assumption).
    Steam Description:
Chernobylite is a science-fiction survival horror RPG. Set in the hyper-realistic, 3D-scanned wasteland of Chernobyl’s Exclusion Zone, explore a non-linear storyline in your search to uncover the truth of your tortured past.

    MINIMUM:

    DirectX: Version 11
    Storage: 40 GB available space
Additional Notes: 30 FPS @ LOW Video Settings
    RECOMMENDED:
    OS: Windows 7 SP1 (x64), Windows 8 (x64), Windows 10 (x64)
Processor: Intel Core i7 4790k CPU

  6. Generation Zero

Generation Zero is a game I picked up on Steam for 75% off at around $7.00. I haven't played it solo but I did play it with a buddy and MAN...it's a whole lot of fun. What I found most interesting is that it takes a nearly empty environment (much like Fallout 76) but makes it feel alive. I originally wanted to pick this up when it first came out, but saw some poor reviews. However - according to the steam ratings, the game has gotten MUCH better. I'm interested to see what the whole story is in this game.

    Steam Description:
Sweden. 1989. When the residents of Östertörn wake to find robots on the rampage, winning becomes living. Alone or with up to three friends, sneak, scavenge and shoot your way to safety across a vast, varied landscape that is as intriguing as it is deadly.
